Paradise Found: Birds of Paradise

  • Male Blue Bird-of-Paradise (Paradisaea rudolphi) in a fruiting tree. Endangered Species (IUCN Red list: VU).
  • Twelve-wired Bird of Paradise (Seleucidis melanoleuca) male at display perch in the swamp rain forest at Nimbokrang, Papua, Indonesia, Island of New Guinea.
  • Huon Astrapia (Astrapia rothschildi) adult male at a fruiting Shefflera tree.
  • Lesser Bird of Paradise (Paradisaea minor) male shaking his plumes and creating an exlosion of feathers – high in the rain forest canopy at his display site (lek).
  • King Bird of Paradise (Cicinnurus regius) male.
  • Twelve-wired Bird of Paradise (Seleucidis melanoleuca)
  • Magnificent Riflebird Bird-of-Paradise (Ptiloris magnificus) male displaying to female.

  • Ribbon-tailed Astrapia (Astrapia mayeri) Adult male in flight in the montane rain forest near Tomba Pass, Papua New Guinea.
  • Trumpet Manucode (Manucodia keraudrenii)
  • Crinkle-collared Manucode (Manucodia chalybata) in fruiting fig tree (Ficus sp.) with an Ornate Fruit dove in the background.
  • Jobi Manucode (Manucodia jobiensis) foraging for figs at a climbing (liana) species of Ficus.
  • Brown Sicklebill Bird of Paradise (Epimachus meyeri) adult male at calling perch in the canopy
  • Stephanie’s Astrapia Bird-of-Paradise (Astrapia stephaniae) adult male feeding at fruits of Shefflera plant.
  • A Superb Bird-of-Paradise (Lophorina superba) adult male calling.
  • Goldie’s Bird of Paradise (Paradisaea decora) males displaying at lek.
  • Curl-crested Manucode (Manucodia comrii) at nest. This species is one of the most primitive birds of paradise, similar to a crow-like ancestral form. Males and femalese look alike.
  • Red Bird of Paradise (Paradisaea rubra) male performing practice display at a tree-top display site called a lek. This perch was 50 meters above the ground.
  • Western Parotia Bird of Paradise (Parotia sefilata) male performing “ballerina dance” display for a female.
  • Magnificent Bird of Paradise (Cicinnurus magnificus) male displaying his green breast shield to a female above from his display perch in the middle of his cleared court.
  • Crinkle-collared Manucode Bird of Paradise perched on a broken tree in the swamp forest along the Karawari River.
  • Male Carola’s Parotia at his display court. Doing the “ballerina” display.
  • Male black-billed Sicklebill performing practice display on a tree trunk. He is spreading breast feathers into a shield which would be presented to a female perched above. These may be the first images of this bird displaying in the wild.
