  • Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis), preening
  • Galapagos Marine Iguanas (Amblyrhynchus cristatus), or Fernandina Marine Iguana, rest in a pile. Punta Espinosa, Fernandina Island, Galapagos Islands. Endangered species (IUCN Red List: VU)
  • Galapagos Sea Lions (Zalophus wollebaeki) on the beach of Española Island.
  • Red-crowned Cranes (Grus japonicus) awaking at dawn on the mist covered Setsuri River, Hokkaido, Japan. IUCN Red List: Endangered Species
  • Emperor shrimp crawling on a sea cucumber.
  • A giant jawfish holding a mouthfull of nearly ready to hatch eggs. Jawfish hold their egg mass in their mouth for protection and aeration, only setting it down when they need to feed. The jawfish lives in a burrow in the bottom, usually in coral rubble next to a reef.
  • A blue-spotted grouper makes a lunge on a reef in Fiji.
  • A red-crowned crane (Grus japonicus) flies through falling snow. Hokkaido, Japan. IUCN Red List: Endangered Species
  • A swift moving school of Schooling Bannerfish, Heniochus diphreutes. Their banded pattern may seen to make them conspicuous, but when they move quickly as a group, it may be confusing and make it harder for prey to target an individual.
  • A red-margined wrasse (Cirrhilabrus rubrimarginatus) in a soft coral’s polyps.
  • Snappers, silversides, and a sea star share space in the underwater world of the mangrove forest. Rich invertebrate life including in some places corals, tunicates, and sponges, cover the underwater portions of red mangrove roots on this offshore mangrove island in Belize. This habitat is an important nursery area and provides shelter for many fish species.

  • Great Bowerbird (Chlamydera nuchalis) male practicing displaying with one of his prize decoration (in this case a pink paper clip found on the college campus).   • Bower of a Vogelkopf Bowerbird (Amblyornis inornatus) decorated with blue berries, dark orange fungi, and orange leaves. The male bowerbird stands in his bower entrance, holding an orange fruit he has just brought to decorate his bower with.
  • Long-nosed frog (Litoria sp nov) on the edge of a leaf. new species
  • Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin) above Anangu creek in Yasuni National Park, Orellana Province, Ecuador
  • Night Monkeys (Aotus vociferans) in a tree cavity along a creek south of Napo Wildlife Center in Yasuni National Park, Orellana Province, Ecuador
  • Cobalt-winged Parakeets (Brotogeris cyanoptera) feeding on clay at the clay lick east of Anangu and south of the Napo River, Yasuni National Park, Orellana Province, Ecuador.
  • Woolly Monkey (Lagothrix poeppigii) at the Tiputini Biodiversity Station, Orellana Province, Ecuador Female making a huge leap.
  • A young rhinoceros hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros) tosses up a fig from a strangler fig tree (Ficus dubia) before swallowing it. Lowland rain forest of Gunung Palung National Park, Borneo.
  • Red-knobbed Hornbill (Aceros cassidix) male at nest hole. Nest tree has strangler fig growing around trunk.
  • A Wallace’s flying frog on a lichen-covered tree branch. This species was discovered by Alfred Russel Wallace.
  • A Rhinoceros Hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros) male carrying mouse to nest. Thailand. IUCN Red List: Near Threatened
  • Rhinoceros hornbills (Buceros rhinoceros) perched high in canopy with lowland rainforest behind. Gunung Palung N.P., Borneo, Indonesia. IUCN Red List: Near Threatened Also, lowland rainforest is a critically endangered habitat in Borneo.
  • A snow monkey or Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) soaks in a hot spring pool while a companion grooms her. Jigokudani, Nagano Pref., Japan. IUCN Red List: LC
  • “Frosty Morning” A frosty fall sunrise at Walden Pond. Frost coats the oak leaves and pine needles on the shoreline. Autumn views at Walden Pond.
  • A flock of Scarlet Ibises (Eudocimus ruber) leaving in a mangrove tree at the Orinoco River Delta, Venezuela.
  • Palm Cockatoo (Probosciger aterrimus) feeding on Beach Almond (Terminalia catappa) Lockhart River Foreshore, Lockhart River, Cape York Peninsula, Australia.
