National Geographic Articles

Tim Laman published his first story in National Geographic magazine in 1997, and has been a regular contributor ever since, publishing twenty-three feature stories to date, and also authoring four of them.  Above are a few of his cover images from National Geographic editions around the world.

  • Tapanuli Orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis). Unidentified unflanged adult male making threatening display towards, Togus, the resident adult flanged male Batang Toru Forest Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Project North Sumatran Province Indonesia
  • Cobalt-winged Parakeets (Brotogeris cyanoptera) eating clay at clay lick east of Anangu and south of the Napo River, Yasuni National Park, Orellana Province, Ecuador
  • Lesser Bird of Paradise (Paradisaea minor) male displaying high in the rain forest canopy at his display site (lek).
  • Club-winged Manakin (Machaeropterus deliciosus) Male hitting its wings together over its back to produce a pure tone. Endemic species to Ecuador. Milpe Cloudforest Reserve
  • Bower of a Vogelkopf Bowerbird (Amblyornis inornatus) decorated with blue berries, dark orange fungi, and orange leaves. The male bowerbird stands in his bower entrance, holding an orange fruit he has just brought to decorate his bower with.
  • Rain forest covered floor of the Gran Caldera Volcanica de Luba. Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea, West Africa.
  • Birds of Paradise #2
  • Sponges, tuncates, and other invertebrate life growing on the roots of Red Mangrove trees in the Belize Cays.
  • Sunset view of blooming Santa Cruz Island buckwheat (Eriogonum arborescens). Endemic to Santa Cruz Island. Channel Islands National Park. Coastal sage scrub habitat, also called chaparrel. Mediterrainan climate zone.
  • An Emperor Angelfish with juvenile color pattern swims in front of a sleeping adult of the same species, with the adult color pattern. During a night dive in Bali, Indonesia (Pomacanthus imperator)
  • A clownfish nestled in the stinging tentacles of a sea anemone.
  • Sooty Terns hover over a nesting colony on an islet near Ua Huka Island, Marquesas Island, French Polynesia.
  • Whooper swans vocalize on frozen Lake Kussharo.
  • Eye of a Panay monitor lizard, Varanus mabitang. A new species discovered in Panay Island, Philippines in 2001. IUCN Red List: Endangered only found in remnant forest on Panay.
  • A female proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) munches on leaves in Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary, Borneo Island.
  • Spectral Tarsier (Tarsius tarsier) eating a cockroach at night. Tangkoko-Duasudara Nature Reserve, Sulawesi, Indonesia.
  • Paradise tree snake (Chrysopelea paradisi) in flight in the rain forest in Borneo.
  • Red-knobbed Hornbill (Aceros cassidix) male portrait in the canopy. Sulawesi, Indonesia.

  • A young rhinoceros hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros) tosses up a fig from a strangler fig tree (Ficus dubia) before swallowing it. Lowland rain forest of Gunung Palung National Park, Borneo.
